Refocus on The Microcosm
It has long been stated, “Necessity is the mother of invention”.1 The word “necessity” itself invokes images of overcoming major survival obstacles.2 The necessity to feed and protect our tribe led to the development of weapons. The necessity to provide for the winter needs of an every growing tribe led to tools for farming and grain silos. The necessity to survive the unpredictability of the elements led to shelters, wells and irrigation.3 This inherent focus on the macro level of existence blinds us to the power of one of physics’ fundamental teachings. “…events at the smallest possible scales can have consequences of cosmic proportions”.4 We need not look any further than the hydrogen bomb for validation of this statement.
The oldest esoteric teachings direct us to refocus our attention on the micro level of existence, to look for the truth from within. They tell us to quiet our outer self so we can become aware of that which is within and beneath the apparent surface.5 Since our minds are by necessity attuned to our own bodies, these systems use the body to reach the mind; they then use the mind to reach our core self. By use of meditation, we are guided through a journey into our internal core, right down to the micro experience level where thought links with matter in our brain. It is here where the electro-chemical stimulation of neurons activates a response within our brain cells. Our brain packages this response, mixing it with memory and conditioned belief, to generate a condition of awareness in our mind.
To allow a future initiate to approach these teachings they were packaged into a language that transcended cultures, languages, and time. They were transmitted in the language of initiation – symbols. This language is universal – both coded and clear. It provides a direct and simplified understanding with reference to readily grasped images. Verbal clues such as using phrases like “listen to your breath...”, “draw your breath to...”, “listen to your thoughts...”, “quiet your thoughts...”, “focus your thoughts...” etc. are actually preparatory exercises and formula. All these teachings were but a mantra or a process for creating just enough separation between the macro and micro aspects so that each is recognized as an individual and unique aspect of our own consciousness.
Further instruction directs us to review our awareness with regard to our surroundings and to nature itself.6 Eventually we are guided to a postulate that the core of all things within this physical plane is a hidden element; some “quintessence”. Call it “Prana”, “Rvch (Ruach), “Divine Breath”, “The First Matter of the Great Work”, “L.V.X”, “Astral Light”, or “Ether”.7
The mystics adopted these descriptions in an attempt to label a singular unseen construct, which surrounds and intertwines within all things brought into existence. Just as we are taught that we can influence our breath and our thoughts, we are also told we can influence this unseen substratum. Why, because we are intimately tied to it.
Dr. Paul Foster Case attributed L.V.X. to inter atomic forces during a time when science was just revealing the amazing world of the atoms.8 Today, science has taken us even further into the sub-atomic world. It is at this level where the new concepts of quantum physics allow us to re-unify science, esoteric teachings, and religion.
